Moths

There may be some of you who will be surprised to learn that there are some pretty interesting insects in Downeast Maine, not just mosquitoes and blackflies! Here are some that I've come across, with identification provided (where ID'ing is possible - please help if you can ID the unknowns!).

This is a Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda). Taken in Machiasport, ME. Click here for more photos of the Rosy Maple Moth!

This is a Walnut Sphinx (Amorpha juglandis). It was huge! Click here for more photos I took of this Walnut Sphinx.

Here is a friendly Luna Moth (Actias luna). A couple of them hung out with me for awhile, pretty cool! Click here for more photos of the Luna Moths.

Here we have a Harnessed Tiger Moth (Apantesis phalerata). You can't see it here but underneath he is flaming red! A striking little moth, kind enough to perch on my hand for some photos. Click here for some more of this guy.

Green Carpet Moth (Colostygia pectinataria)

Silver Spotted Tiger Moth (Lophocampa argentata). Click here for another shot.
